Barack Obama and Trevor Noah Have a Heart-to-Heart on The Daily Show

With just nine shows left at The Daily Show, Trevor Noah brought in none other than former president Barack Obama as a guest for an insightful conversation about the midterms and the importance of young-voter turnout, as well as a look into their uncle-nephew dynamic.
Noah has interviewed President Obama twice before on The Daily Show: once virtually during the pandemic to discuss Obama’s memoir, A Promised Land, and then again for one of Obama’s final interviews at the White House. But until yesterday, the 44th president of the United States had never been interviewed by Noah in studio at The Daily Show. It’s no surprise, then, that a line wrapped around West 52nd Street to grab a free seat to watch the show’s taping.
Before the cameras began rolling, Noah regaled the studio audience with a story about what it’s like to interact with Obama and how different the former president is from other world leaders. “Generally, leaders of nations have a very stiff vibe to them,” Noah said. “I guess it comes with the job. There’s a certain respect you afford them.”
He continued, “The funny thing is, President Obama, he’s loose and funny and he’s got swag and everything,” he continued. “And then when he’ll talk to you he’ll make jokes and everything, and you’ll be all stiff.” Noah then broke into his very accurate Obama impersonation, “Trevor, what’s going on. How it do, baby?” causing the audience to break out into applause. But Noah said calibrating the level of reverence with the level of of casualness can be tricky when talking to a politician as cool as Obama.
“But if you’re not careful, you’ll get carried away and be like, ‘You’re damn straight I’m doing well,’” he said, in perhaps too casual a tone.
Noah then compared their relationship to one of a nephew and a “cool uncle” who talks trash with his nephews, but the trash talk only goes one way. “You’ll be like, ‘Look at your haircut,’ and they’ll say, ‘Don’t speak to your elders like that. Don’t forget.’”
Obama demonstrated this dynamic when he came out onstage for his half-hour interview with Noah. After a lengthy standing ovation (“I should have brought Michelle here. This is how I’d like to be greeted when I come home”), Noah dove in, “Do you miss your name, by the way?” Noah asked. “Because everyone calls you Mr. President. If people called me Mr. Daily, I would miss Trevor.”
“My best friends call me Barack,” the president replied. “You should call me Mr. President.”
Their playful dynamic continued into the interview. Obama downplayed “the Obama effect” as the reason for Democrats’ strong midterm showing and credited the strength of democratic candidates, like Pennsylvania’s John Fetterman and Josh Shapiro. “They are committed, passionate, down-to-earth; they connect with people,” he said. “And I come in mainly to shine a spotlight on them.”
After Obama praised young people for rocking the vote a few weeks ago, Noah pointed out that the percentage of young voters turning up for elections seems to have actually declined over time. “What is always true is that young people are going to vote at slightly lower rates than old people like me,” Obama said.
“Because they’ve got better things to do. Michelle and I are sitting at home eating dinner. We’ve kind of run out of things to say. Well, let’s go vote,” he said, garnering a big laugh. “Young people- Malia and Sasha -they’re out. They’ve got all kinds of stuff.”

Plus, if we’re lucky, he may even dish on his last days at “The Daily Show” or new relationship with pop star Dua Lipa.

Trevor Noah 2023 tour schedule
The tour officially kicks off in Atlanta on Jan. 20, just six weeks after Noah officially ends his tenure as “The Daily Show” host. His last show hosting the program is scheduled for Dec. 8.

“A Strange Loop” Broadway talkback
On Tuesday, Nov. 29, Noah will host a post-show talkback of the Tony Award-winning musical “A Strange Loop” as part of NYC Black Theatre Night.

Dua Lipa relationship
In late September, photos of Noah with the three-time Grammy winner surfaced on Twitter.
The first photo of the pair is innocuous enough- the pair seem to be walking the streets of New York City together.
However, the second picture is what seals the deal where Noah, 38, locks lips with Lipa, 27.

Even though Trevor Noah may seem like the busiest man in entertainment, that’s still not all.
On top of all the above- plus, a gig hosting the 2022 Grammys- he’s also releasing a his third Netflix special “I Wish You Would” on Nov. 22.
His two previous specials, 2017’s “Afraid of the Dark” and 2018’s “Son of Patricia” can currently be streamed on the platform.
Trevor Noah’s “Born A Crime” book
After being announced as the successor to Jon Stewart as “The Daily Show” host in 2015, Noah released his humorous autobiography “Born a Crime: Stories from a South African Childhood” which quickly became a New York Times Bestseller.
“Born a Crime” tells the story of Noah growing up in South Africa midway through the apartheid era which made his mixed race status- he was born to a white Swiss-German father and Black Xhosa mother- a crime.

“The Daily Show” replacement host
Since the announcement that Noah was departing the venerated half-hour satire, there’s been much speculation about who would replace him behind the desk that he occupied for seven years.
Although no official announcement has been made yet, the New York Post guessed that former correspondent Samantha Bee and “Harold and Kumar” star Kal Penn may be in the running.
